Psychologist, counsellor and social worker roles · Kew, Melbourne
Practise your way, without running a practice
We're looking for a psychologist, social worker, counsellor or therapist who wants to work differently, in Kew and by telehealth. You do the clinical work and build the things you care about. We run the bookings, billing and systems around you.
We're a young practice of two psychologists, and this role starts from zero. There's no waiting list to hand over and no caseload waiting for you. You'd build it with us.
Who we're looking for
We want to add to what we offer, not double it. Matthew and Natalia already work across ADHD, anxiety, depression and mood, trauma, sleep, burnout and stress, chronic health and older adults. The right person brings something we don't: another language, another way of working, or an area we don't currently cover.
- Couples therapy
- Family therapy
- EMDR
- Eating disorders
- A language other than English
- Something we haven't thought of
You might be a psychologist, a mental health social worker, a counsellor or a therapist from another discipline. We're open to all of them. For psychologists, general registration is fine. You don't need years of private practice behind you. You do need a clear sense of what you'd like to build.
An honest start
We can't promise you a full diary, or a set number of sessions a week. You'd be starting from zero, and we'd rather say so now than have you find out in month two.
What we can promise is the work around it: the referrers we introduce you to, the pages that make you easy to find, and the systems that carry an enquiry to your diary without you chasing it. How quickly it grows depends on the area you bring and the time we both put into building it.
We think it's a fairer start than it sounds. Because you'd be filling a gap rather than sharing our clients, the people who find you are people we would otherwise have had to refer elsewhere.
What we take care of
Running a practice is a second job most clinicians never trained for. We've built the systems so you don't have to.
Your clinical judgement, how you keep your notes and the way you run your own work. You choose who you see, including whether to take on TAC, WorkSafe or other funded clients, and if you do, their reports and letters are yours to complete. Our templates and procedures are there if you'd like them, and you're free to use your own. You also set your own availability and keep it up to date.
Bring your ideas
We'd like this practice to do more than one-to-one sessions. Groups, workshops, online courses, education for GPs and the wider community. Some of these we're building now. Others haven't been thought of yet, and might be yours.
If you have an idea, we'll help you get it off the ground: a page on the website, bookings and payments, printed and online materials, and a room to run it in. We agree the arrangement for each one up front, and what you create stays yours.
We're working towards an integrative practice, where clinicians of different disciplines work as one team rather than alongside each other, and where people can grow inside the role instead of needing to leave to develop.
How we work together
We'd like to build something people want to stay in.
Open, not guarded
We share what we know: templates, systems, referrer contacts. If it helps you do good work, it's yours to use.
Clients choose
Clients come to Equal Psychology, but they aren't bound to it. If you leave, the people you work with can choose to come with you.
Supported
Two colleagues who are always happy to talk a case through. If you'd like it, you can also join our monthly group supervision with an external supervisor, for a small fee.
The arrangement
Is this for you?
It may suit you if
- You'd rather build something than step into a full diary.
- You have an area, approach or language you want to grow.
- You want the business side handled, and a say in how things are done.
- You like trying things and seeing what works.
It may not suit you if
- You need a steady income from your first month.
- You'd like to run every part of your own business.
- You'd prefer a large team with set ways of doing things.
Questions
No. You need current registration or accreditation with your professional body, and the confidence to work independently. Our procedures and templates are there to support you, and our monthly group supervision is open to you for a small fee if you want it.
We can't tell you that. It depends on the area you bring, the time you put into building it, and how many people are looking for it. We share every referral and marketing channel we use, and we review how things are going with you along the way.
Yes. You can see clients in person at Kew, by telehealth, or a mix of both.
Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Treatment Plan are available for sessions with psychologists and eligible mental health social workers, but not for counsellors. Clients who see a counsellor pay the full fee, and some private health funds offer a rebate under extras cover.
No. It's a service contract with you as a sole trader, and you make your own clinical decisions. If the arrangement becomes sustainable for both of us, we're open to talking about employment.
Records are kept in the practice's clinical records system and held jointly by you and Equal Psychology.
Your clients can choose to keep seeing you. The contract sets out how notice, records and continuity of care are handled, so nobody is left without a plan.
